Kolarovich" Subject: Press Release 06/99 ]|[ S.U.C. - MEMBERS -+- No: 54 ]|[ FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: No 06/99 March 26, 1999 JONATHAN CLARKE ( 202) 785-8430 SERBIAN UNITY CONGRESS CONDEMNS PRESIDENT CLINTON'S ADDRESS TO THE SERBIAN PEOPLE AS CYNICAL AND COUNTERPRODUCTIVE President Bill Clinton's address to the Serbian people of March 26, 1999 is welcome but seriously mistimed. A much more effective time for such an appeal would have been before NATO's onslaught, not while innocent people are being killed. In the present circumstances, his remarks are ill-advised and likely to be counterproductive. His appeal to "Serbs of good will" at a time when NATO is launching an unprecedented wave of illegal aggression and killing against the Serbian people will be treated by the overwhelming majority of Serbs as wholly cynical. On the Serbian side there are indeed many people of good will. On March 18, 1999, for example, an interfaith meeting took place in Vienna under the auspices of the Austrian Chancellor and attended by leaders of the Jewish, Muslim, Catholic, and Orthodox faiths from Kosovo. They issued a "Vienna Declaration" calling for an immediate resumption of negotiations. If President Clinton is serious about good will, he should listen to appeals such as this, and other proposals for a durable solution rather than his war commanders. Meetings such as these give the lie to the President's claim that NATO's bombing campaign came "after exhausting every other option." This is simply not true. The military action has cut off and destroyed promising options for peace. The Serbian Unity Congress agrees with calls from the Italian and Greek Prime Ministers that the negotiation process must be reopened without delay. Bombing must stop forthwith. The references to an "agreement" on Kosovo are misleading. There was never an agreement. The Rambouillet proposals consisted of a unilateral western Diktat by our State Department which both sides were pressured to accept under coercion. This is contrary to the Vienna Convention on Treaties which bans the use of duress to coerce agreement to international treaties. The President's review of the history of the last 10 years is serious flawed. Serbia did not initiate wars with Croatia or Bosnia. These were precipitated by the unconstitutional withdrawal of those republics from the then Yugoslav federation and the premature recognition of their independence by the international community, including the United States. The war waged by Croatia against Serbia which ended with the ethnic cleansing of over 250,000 Serbs from their ancestral homes in Krajina finds no mention in the President's remarks. This is a glaring example of anti-Serb double standards. The omission of any mention of Kosovo Albanian terrorism is also striking. More innocent civilians on both sides have fallen victim to Albanian terrorism than to the Serbian security forces. The SUC agrees with President Clinton that "there has been too much propaganda and too little plain truth." Sadly his statement is more propaganda than truth. This is contrary to US interests and to American values. As patriotic Americans we are gravely concerned at the risks our nation is facing. These risks will be redoubled if we neglect the truth. We welcome the opportunity for genuine dialogue but, to quote the President's words, this must be based not on propaganda but on the truth. ------------------------- From: "Milutin Zecevic" To: Date: Sat, 27 Mar 1999 01:28:51 +0100 Posto sam poslao poruke dalje,za ameriku nazvao sam Bobana Ilica ( bilic58456@aol.com ) koji se upravo vratio sa demonstracija u Cikagu.Kaze da su amerikanci skroz hipnotisani televizijom, nisu znali ni zasto Srbi protestuju.Ali bez obzira na glupost amerikanaca nas glas se cuje. I have seen my countrymen Hungarians and Romanians from Zrenjanin. Also, if you have any evidence, pictures American or NATO airplanes or documents that can show that the languages of minorities in Yugoslavia are recognized, and that they have equal rights with Serbs, send them so that the local television stations, we are in a little favor of, could publish it.
